The Essex River is the host of local commerce and culture that thousands of people have the joy of experiencing each year.

Essex Residents may apply for a Commercial or Recreational Clamming Permit, Sea Worm or Eel permit. If you have moved to Town recently, please bring proof of residency with you when you apply.

Non-residents are restricted to recreational shellfish permits only. Please see the Clam, Sea Worm and Eel Regulations below for the procedure to obtain a non-resident permit.

The Shellfish Constable has a clam flat closure hotline to check the status of the flats at 978-768-3915. Please check the status of the flats before clamming.

Please note: The Board of Selectmen unianmously voted at their meeting on August 14, 2017 to open the winter flats every year on January 15th and to close the winter flats every year on April 15th at midnight; not withstanding, the Selectmen reserve their right to change their decision in the future should conditions warrant.
