Wastewater Department

The Essex Wastewater Department will be cleaning sewer mains in the area of 137 Eastern Ave and Harlow Street on Wednesday, April 19.  This may cause some pressure to be built up in your home's sewer line. For any concerns please contact the office at 978-768-6262

The Essex Wastewater Department would like to remind residents connected to the town sewer system that connecting sump pumps to their sewer discharge pipes is against the sewer rules and regulations and is also a violation of Massachusetts General Law c. 83, 5. This violation puts a financial burden on all sewer users. 

Per the town’s sewer regulations, these illicit discharges can and will be punishable up to and including termination of sewer service. Some residents with ground water concerns may look to acquire a permit to legally discharge into the town’s drainage system. Please contact the Department of Public Works/Wastewater Office at 978-768-6262 with any questions in regards to this permit process or other storm water related questions.
